Day 7Twelve Centers, Gross to Subtle

This dharana uses a sequence of inner supports. Each support is entered, refined, and then gently released until attention rests in simple awareness.

Sanskrit

क्रमद्वादशकं सम्यग्द्वादशाक्षरभेदितम् ।स्थूलसूक्ष्मपरस्थित्या मुक्त्वा मुक्त्वान्ततः शिवः ॥

Transliteration

kramadvādaśakaṃ samyag dvādaśākṣara-bheditamsthūla-sūkṣma-para-sthityā muktvā muktvāntataḥ śivaḥ

Literal Translation

The twelve successive centers, properly divided by the twelve letters, are contemplated in the gross, subtle, and supreme states. Releasing each one successively, in the end there is Shiva.

Plain English Rendering

Move through the inner sequence step by step, using each center and its sound as a temporary support; release the gross, release the subtle, release even the refined support, and rest in Shiva-like awareness.

Literal translations remain close to the source text. Plain English renderings are interpretive contemplative renderings for accessibility and reflection.

Meaning

The verse points to twelve successive centers associated with twelve letters. It does not require adding extra imagery or symbolic systems beyond that simple sequence.

The gross level means the more tangible support: body, location, sensation, or the felt point of attention.

The subtle level means the quieter support: breath, inner feeling, vibration, or the refined sense of presence.

The supreme level is the final quieting of dependence on any support. Each stage is used, then gently left behind.

The Practice

  1. 1Sit quietly.
  2. 2Let the breath remain natural.
  3. 3Sense the body's inner axis without strain.
  4. 4Move attention step by step through the inner sequence.
  5. 5At each point, first notice the gross level: body, location, or sensation.
  6. 6Then notice the subtle level: breath, inner feeling, or quiet vibration.
  7. 7Then let even that refined support become transparent.
  8. 8Release each support gently and continue.
  9. 9At the end, rest in simple awareness.

Practice for 10 minutes.

What to Notice

  • attention becomes steadier when it moves in sequence
  • a support can be useful without becoming final
  • gross sensation can soften into subtle feeling
  • subtle feeling can open into quiet awareness

Common Misunderstandings

  • Do not turn the twelve centers into a rigid anatomy lesson.
  • Do not add color systems or unrelated symbolism.
  • Do not force concentration at any point.
  • Do not cling to subtle experiences as achievements.

Reflection Prompt

Can I use each support fully, then release it without loss?

Connection to Inner Freedom

Inner freedom deepens when awareness no longer depends on any single support, gross or subtle. The practice trains a gentle release from identification into simple presence.
