Sanskrit
ईदृशेन क्रमेणैव यत्र कुत्रापि चिन्तना ।शून्ये कुड्ये परे पात्रे स्वयं लीना वरप्रदा ॥
Transliteration
īdṛśena krameṇaiva yatra kutrāpi cintanāśūnye kuḍye pare pātre svayaṃ līnā varapradā
Literal Translation
In this very systematic manner, wherever awareness is placed on emptiness, whether in an empty wall or in a higher vessel or personage, it becomes absorbed in itself and bestows a great gift.
Plain English Rendering
“Place awareness gently on emptiness wherever it is noticed. Whether the support is ordinary or refined, attention can settle into itself and reveal a quiet spaciousness.”
Literal translations remain close to the source text. Plain English renderings are interpretive contemplative renderings for accessibility and reflection.
Meaning
The verse extends the previous method: emptiness can be contemplated in many places, not only in a special setting or object.
The examples move from ordinary to refined. A wall, a vessel, or a revered person can all become supports when attention notices the open quality present there.
Absorption here means attention settling into its own spacious nature. The gift is not a dramatic event, but the quiet recognition that awareness is already open.
The Practice
- 1Sit comfortably.
- 2Let the breath settle naturally.
- 3Choose a simple support, such as a blank wall, open space, or quiet object.
- 4Place awareness on the emptiness or openness present there.
- 5Do not search for anything unusual.
- 6Let attention become simple and steady.
- 7Notice awareness settling back into itself.
- 8Rest without strain in that spacious quiet.
Practice for 10 minutes.
What to Notice
- silence beneath ordinary perception
- reduction of mental agitation
- subtle clarity
- effortless presence
Common Misunderstandings
- This is not a breath-control exercise.
- Do not suppress breathing.
- Do not force emptiness into blankness.
- The practice is about awareness, not endurance.
Reflection Prompt
“Can I notice openness in ordinary experience without trying to make it special?”
Connection to Inner Freedom
Inner freedom becomes more available when awareness does not depend on rare conditions. Even ordinary experience can reveal spaciousness when attention rests gently in emptiness.
