ऊर्ध्वे प्राणो ह्यधो जीवो विसर्गात्मा परोच्चरेत् ।उत्पत्तिद्वितयस्थाने भरणाद्भरिता स्थितिः ॥
Transliteration

Literal Translation
The exhaling breath moves upward, and the inhaling breath moves downward. By resting awareness at the two places where they arise, the state becomes filled with fullness.
Plain English Rendering
“When attention rests in the silent movement and turning of breath, awareness becomes naturally full and steady.”
Literal translations remain close to the source text. Plain English renderings are interpretive contemplative renderings for accessibility and reflection.
Meaning
The mind is usually in movement, following thought, sensation, memory, and expectation.
Between breaths there is a natural quietness. It is brief, simple, and easy to miss when attention is hurried.
The practice is to notice this stillness without forcing anything. Awareness is already present there.
The Practice
- 1Sit comfortably.
- 2Let the breath move naturally.
- 3Observe inhalation.
- 4Observe exhalation.
- 5Notice the tiny pause between breaths.
- 6Rest attention gently there.
- 7Do not manipulate the breath.
Practice for 5–10 minutes.
What to Notice
- thought briefly softens
- silence is already present
- awareness remains without effort
Common Misunderstandings
- This is not breath control.
- Do not strain or hold the breath aggressively.
- The goal is observation, not trance.
Reflection Prompt
“What remains when attention briefly stops following thought?”
Connection to Inner Freedom
Stillness is not something newly created. It is something gradually noticed beneath constant mental movement.
