piṇḍamantrasya sarvasya sthūlavarṇakrameṇa tuardhendubindunādāntaḥ śūnyoccārād bhavec chivaḥ
Literal Translation
One who proceeds step by step from the gross letters of any seed mantra through the crescent and bindu to the end of sound in emptiness becomes Shiva.
Plain English Rendering
“Let a simple mantra be heard first as sound, then more subtly as fading resonance, until attention rests in the emptiness at the end of sound.”
Literal translations remain close to the source text. Plain English renderings are interpretive contemplative renderings for accessibility and reflection.
Meaning
The verse describes a gradual refinement of mantra. Attention begins with the gross, audible form and follows it into subtler phases.
Crescent, bindu, and nada name progressively subtler supports in the sound sequence. The practice does not need elaborate visualization; it asks for careful, stepwise refinement.
The culmination is the end of sound in emptiness. Becoming Shiva points to awareness resting in that open, uncontracted stillness.
The Practice
- 1Sit quietly.
- 2Let the body and breath settle.
- 3Choose a simple mantra or sacred syllable.
- 4Sound it gently, noticing its clear audible form.
- 5Follow the sound as it becomes subtler.
- 6Notice the fading resonance without trying to hold it.
- 7Rest at the end of sound in open emptiness.
- 8Allow awareness to remain spacious and unforced.
Practice for 10 minutes, keeping the sound soft and the attention relaxed.
What to Notice
- gross sound becoming subtle
- reduction of mental tightness
- spacious awareness at the end of sound
- less identification with sound as a fixed object
Common Misunderstandings
- Do not turn the practice into metaphysical speculation.
- Do not force symbolic imagery.
- The subtle phases may be felt simply as fading sound.
- The practice is about openness of awareness, not performance.
Reflection Prompt
“Can I follow sound into subtlety without grasping at any stage?”
Connection to Inner Freedom
Inner freedom deepens when awareness can move from form into subtlety and finally rest in emptiness. The mantra becomes a doorway into openness rather than something to possess.
