Literal translations remain close to the source text. Plain English renderings are interpretive contemplative renderings for accessibility and reflection.
Meaning
The verse names long tones from stringed instruments as the contemplative support. The practice is sustained listening, not analysis of music.
Single-minded attention means attention becomes gathered and uncomplicated. It rests with the continuity of sound without chasing thoughts or separate impressions.
The space of the Supreme is approached here as spacious awareness revealed through refined listening.
The Practice
- 1Sit comfortably.
- 2Choose a simple, sustained sound, such as a long musical tone or gentle drone.
- 3Let the breath remain natural.
- 4Listen without trying to name, analyze, or evaluate the sound.
- 5Allow attention to rest in the continuity of the tone.
- 6When thoughts or sensations arise, let them come and go naturally.
- 7Stay relaxed and undistracted.
- 8Notice the spacious awareness in which the sound appears.
Practice for 10 minutes with a soft volume and relaxed attention.
What to Notice
- centered stillness through listening
- less mental scattering
- quiet continuity of awareness
- subtle spaciousness around sound
Common Misunderstandings
- The sound is a support, not an object to obsess over.
- Do not strain to maintain focus.
- Stillness may feel ordinary and subtle.
- The practice is relaxed awareness, not concentration performance.
Reflection Prompt
“Can sustained listening become spacious without becoming tense?”
Connection to Inner Freedom
Inner freedom deepens when attention can remain steady without tightening. Sound becomes a doorway into spacious awareness rather than another object to grasp.
