Meaning

Humility, absence of pretence, non-violence, patience, straightforwardness, reverence for the teacher, purity, steadiness, and self-control; dispassion toward sense objects, absence of ego, and reflection on the suffering inherent in birth, death, old age, and disease; non-attachment, lack of clinging to family and possessions, and equanimity in desirable and undesirable situations; devotion to Me with single-pointedness, love of solitude, and disinterest in crowds; constancy in self-knowledge and understanding the purpose of truth — all this is called knowledge. Anything else is ignorance.

Key Values

  • amānitvam — humility
  • adambhitvam — absence of pretence
  • ahiṁsā — non-violence
  • kṣāntiḥ — patience
  • ārjavam — simplicity
  • vairāgyam — dispassion
  • anahaṅkāraḥ — absence of ego
  • sama-cittatvam — emotional balance
  • bhaktiḥ — devotion
  • adhyātma-jñāna — commitment to self-knowledge

Teaching

Krishna now defines something surprising. These values are called “knowledge.” Why? Because without them, the mind is not ready to see the truth. Knowledge is not just intellectual. It requires a prepared mind — a mind that is calm, clear, and free from disturbance. These values reduce ego, attachment, and agitation. They create the inner condition in which clarity can arise and remain.

Connection to Clarity

Clarity is not just thinking correctly. It depends on the condition of the mind. A disturbed, ego-driven, reactive mind cannot see clearly. These values prepare the mind to receive and retain knowledge. This is the bridge between discipline and clarity.

Reflection

Which of these values are strong in me? Which ones need more attention for my mind to become clearer and steadier?
