MokshaFive Keys to Inner Freedom

A simple framework for living with clarity, steadiness, and inner freedom.

Clarity — Lesson 24

Living free from doership (Gita 5.13)

Verse

सर्वकर्माणि मनसा संन्यस्यास्ते सुखं वशी ।
नवद्वारे पुरे देही नैव कुर्वन्न कारयन् ॥ ५.१३ ॥

Transliteration

sarva-karmāṇi manasā sannyasyāste sukhaṁ vaśī
nava-dvāre pure dehī naiva kurvan na kārayan

Meaning

Having mentally renounced all actions, the self-controlled one remains happily in the body, the city of nine gates, neither acting nor causing action.

Key Words

  • sarva-karmāṇi — all actions
  • manasā sannyasya — mentally renouncing
  • vaśī — self-controlled
  • nava-dvāre pure — in the body (city of nine gates)
  • dehī — the embodied one
  • na kurvan — not acting
  • na kārayan — not causing action

Teaching

Krishna deepens the teaching of non-doership. The wise person understands clearly: “I do not act.” Actions belong to the body and mind. The Self simply illumines them. The body is compared to a city with nine gates — eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and other openings. Life continues in this “city,” but the Self remains untouched. This understanding brings ease and freedom.

Connection to Clarity

Clarity removes the burden of doership. When I take ownership of every action, I carry pressure and stress. When I understand my role correctly, I see that actions happen through the body-mind. I remain the aware presence. This shift brings inner relaxation, even while fully engaged in life.

Reflection

Can I see the body as an instrument through which actions happen? What changes when I stop identifying myself as the doer?
