Meaning
Arjuna asks about nature, the individual, the body (field), and the knower of the field. Krishna replies: This body is called the field. The one who knows it is called the knower of the field. And know Me as the knower of all fields. The knowledge of the field and the knower of the field — that alone is true knowledge.
Key Words
- kṣetram — field (body, mind, experience)
- kṣetrajñaḥ — knower of the field
- prakṛti — nature (matter)
- puruṣa — consciousness
- jñānam — knowledge
- jñeyam — what is to be known
Teaching
Krishna now gives a powerful framework. Everything that can be observed — body, mind, thoughts, emotions — is the “field.” The one who knows all this is the “knower.” We usually mix these up. We say: “I am the body,” “I am sad,” “I am thinking.” But in reality, the body and mind are known to us. Therefore, they are objects. The real “I” is the knower, the awareness in whose presence all this is known. This distinction is fundamental to clarity.
Connection to Clarity
Clarity begins with discrimination. What is observed is not the observer. The body is observed. The mind is observed. Thoughts are observed. Therefore, I am not them. I am the knower of all of them. This shift removes confusion at the root.
Reflection
Can I observe my thoughts and emotions? If I can observe them, can they truly be what I am?
