Day 7
Inquiry
The Witness Is Not Personal
Verse
The Self is one.
It appears as many because of different bodies and minds.
Just as one sun is reflected in many waters,
the one consciousness appears as many individuals.
Now a deeper correction is needed.
We have seen that I am the witness — the one to whom thoughts, body, and experience are known.
But it is easy to make a mistake here.
One may think: "I am the witness inside this body."
This is still a limitation.
The witness is not located inside the body. The body and mind appear in the presence of the witness.
The text gives a simple example.
One sun is reflected in many pots of water. In each pot, you may say, "this is my sun."
But in reality, there is only one sun.
The reflections are many. The original is one.
In the same way, consciousness — the Self — is one.
Because of many bodies and minds, it appears as though there are many individuals.
But the witness itself is not divided.
It is not personal. It is not private. It is not confined.
This is the beginning of Advaita — non-duality.
Not many selves. One reality, appearing as many.
Key Insight
The witness is not an individual inside the body. It is the one consciousness in whose presence all bodies and minds appear.
Common Misunderstanding
This does not mean all people think the same or behave the same. Differences belong to the body and mind. The consciousness that illumines them is one.
Takeaway
I am not a separate witness among many. The same consciousness is present in all.
Reflection
Am I truly confined to this body, or is the body appearing in my awareness?
Closing
The shift from many to one is the heart of Advaita.
These verses use the example of one sun reflected in many waters to show that consciousness is one, not many.
Consciousness is not divided by the bodies it illumines.
