Understanding

Why Limitation Still Feels Real

Verse

Even after knowledge, old tendencies may continue.

Due to past habit, the sense of limitation can appear.

But the truth remains unchanged.

At this point, an honest question arises.

If I am not limited, if I am the Self, if I am Brahman — why do I still feel like an individual?

Why does fear come? Why does insecurity come? Why does limitation still seem real?

Vedanta addresses this clearly.

Knowledge removes ignorance. It corrects the mistake.

But the mind has been living with this mistake for a long time.

It has formed patterns. Reactions. Habits.

These are called vasanas — deeply ingrained tendencies.

Even after the rope is known, the body may still react for a moment as if there were a snake. The reaction lingers, even though the knowledge is clear.

In the same way, even after understanding, the old sense of individuality may continue to appear.

But this does not invalidate the knowledge.

The key point is this:

The feeling of limitation is not proof of limitation.

It is a leftover habit.

Knowledge does not depend on experience matching immediately. It stands on clarity.

Over time, as the understanding becomes firm, these tendencies lose their hold.

But even before that, the truth remains unchanged.

You are not what appears. You are the reality because of which it appears.

Key Insight

A lingering feeling of limitation does not cancel knowledge. It reflects past conditioning, not present truth.

Common Misunderstanding

If limitation is still felt, it does not mean the knowledge is incomplete. It means the mind is still adjusting.

Takeaway

Do not measure truth by shifting experience. Stay with clear understanding.

Reflection

Am I taking my current feeling as the truth, or am I able to stay with what I have clearly understood?

Closing

Knowledge corrects the mistake. Time helps dissolve the habit.

This lesson explains the role of vasanas — how old tendencies can continue even after clear knowledge.

What continues after knowledge is habit, not truth.
